Optimist Yachting - Term 4

Thank you to all the parent helpers who assisted with our Optimist yachting experience in the first week of this term. The Room 7, 8 and 9 students gained a number of skills through taking part in this valuable EOTC experience, including;

 - rigging an optimist yacht
 - tying a bowline and a figure 8 knot
 - working as a team (being either Captain or First Mate)
 - using wind direction to tack

Check out our photos below!

1. Setting up the optimist yachts before safety checks.

2. Waiting to launch after being fitted for a life jacket

3. Transporting our yachts to the water using the trailers.

4. The launch!

5. Smooth sailing and maneuvering around other yachts, swimmers and kayakers.

6. Sailing solo.

7. Our photogenic parent helpers.

Opti-Yachting

WALT assemble, and disassemble, a yacht. Next term we are going sailing at the Pandora Pond and we have to know some things about yachting before we go.

Where to put the sail.
Where to put the centre board.
How to attach the main sheet.
Where the tiller goes.
How to do some knots.
Plus lots of other different names for stuff on and around a boat.
We can't wait.

Cross Country Training

We are now in full swing with our Term 3 Cross Country training.

Each day, the Year 5 and 6 students aim to achieve their personal best by going a little faster or a little further than the time before. We have been amazed by the students who continually strive to achieve their best and show determination and perseverance.

Keep it up, Team 789!

A Warm Welcome to Miss Rodda

Kiaora! My name is Miss (Jess) Rodda and I'm a 1st year EIT candidate teacher. I've been placed in Clive School for the whole year and have just started my 3 week Practicum in Room 7! I've also spent time with both the Explorers and Middle School prior to this. I was born and raised in Central Hawkes Bay, but have spent the last few years working and travelling. I'm super excited to get to know this awesome bunch of Year 5's and 6's - don't be afraid to say hello if you see me around!

The Game of Moostry

Over the past week, some of the Year 5 and 6 students have been working hard to prepare for 'The Game of Moostry'. To participate, each class is first paired with another NZ class. The students then must video call their paired class and can only ask yes/no questions in order to figure out the following information about their paired school;
 - island
 - region
 - town or city
 - school name

Using only Google Maps, their questioning skills and their knowledge of NZ, the children will aim to beat the other school to figure out this information.

The following pictures are part of the Photographic Scavenger Hunt which we completed this week in preparation for our Moostry Challenge.

Enjoy!

Out in the Weather - Recount Writing

As the weather begins to get colder, the students of Room 7 have been reflecting on their past experiences where the weather has played a part in what they did that day. Here are a collection of their weather related recounts. Get yourself a hot drink, put your slippers on and enjoy the work of our budding young writers!

One day I went on my trampolines. It was really sunny, it was about 30 degrees. Then it started to pour down with rain and I got soaking wet. I went inside to get my brothers, their names are Max and Sam.

We went outside and did some flips. We were really wet and that was when Max decided to have a water balloon fight. We filled the water balloons up. It took around 20 minutes. We had fifty each.

Then we hid around the house. I saw Max hiding behind the hedge so I snuck up behind him and threw a water balloon at him, but I missed. Max still didn't know I was there. I threw another one at Max and I hit him and he was out.

It was now just me and Sam left. I saw Sam peeking through the garden so I took a long shot and hit him. So we met back where we started and I got the golden water balloon. Then I threw it at Max and I accidentally hit his face. Pop! Ouch!

Cyclone Cook
After Cyclone Cook had stopped, my family and I were set the job of getting rid of a 30 metre pine tree that had fallen down and smashed the gate and the power line to the house.

It was very hot and all you could hear was the sound of the chainsaw. There were wood chips everywhere. It took 3 to 4 days to chop and move all the wood. Then we had to burn some of it and turn some of it into firewood. It was a long time before they regained power.

Last year, around New Years Eve, me and my family went to Gisborne. In the car we were thinking that it was going to be hot and sunny the whole time. But the first few days were the total opposite. It was stormy and rainy and the wind was so strong that it ripped our tent and we had to sleep in the car. The weather was bad! We expected to be going surfing and diving a lot but it was horrific! After about three days, it started to calm down but we didn't know if it would pick up again. On the day before New Year's Day it was sunny again so we made a swing and enjoyed the sunlight.

When I played with AJ it was a sunny day. My bike was broken so I went to my house to tell my Dad. Then we went to the park, we played on the swings. I was so happy because it was sunny. It was so hot and warm. We played a little bit. We went to AJ's house then my house.

One night I woke up and my room was pitch black. There had been a thunder storm! I walked to the light, flicked the switch but it did not work because there had been a power cut. The day before, my brother had created a little light. I picked it up but I broke it! I gave up and went to bed. In the morning I tried the light switch again, it still did not work. So I went to my Mum and Dad's room, woke them up and said "There has been a power cut!" Then we hopped in the car and saw the power line, it had been struck by lightning! Then we saw some men working on it and we asked them if they wanted anything from the shop. They said "a coke please!" So we went to the shop and got them a coke, brought it to them and went back home. We had dinner and went to bed. In the morning I checked the lights and the power was on. What a relief!
